'Lilium nepalense var. robustum'
Discovered by Elwes in 1879 and introduced to commerce shortly thereafter. According to the book by Ed McRae, 'A Guide For Grower And Collectors', this form of L. nepalense can only tolerate no more than a degree or so of frost. It emerges in early May and flowers in late July / early August, requiring very well drained, deep, constantly moist soil. A cool greenhouse is almost a must. Not known to be in commerce at this time, the petal tips of this species twist and curl back as the flower ages.
