'Lilium taliense var. kaichen'
(Species / Wild Lily)
Another unusual and lovely variant of Lilium talense our title photo is of
L. taliense var. kaichen grown from seed obtained by Ed McRae from the Edinburgh Botanic Garden that had been collected in the Chinese province of Yunnan by Chin Yi.
Title photo was taken during a visit to Lava Rock Nursery where Ed had at one time maintained a rather large and extensive collection of Lilium species. The name "Kaichen" derives from the name of Chin Yi's nursery in China where the seed was shipped from. It is said that this name "kaichen" has not officially been accepted as it is felt this is simply a color variant of 'L. taliense'. In nature this lily was found between 5,300 and 6,000 feet (1,600 to 2,000 meters) where winter temps fall to well below zero, but they have ample snow cover for protection.
