'Sweet Memories' - J. Mak Oriental™
For us, 'Sweet Memories' brings back the cherished memories of the taller growing Strahm, Woodriff, and OBF “Imperial” Oriental hybrids of the 1970's. The look of yesteryear was bred out by cut flower hybridizers during more recent times to meet commercial greenhouse demands for up facing flowers. The path to Oriental lily breeding seriously began in the 1960's and progressed to mostly non-spotted, solid color, upward facing flowers, far from the natural grace of outfacing wild lilies found in the mountainous regions of Japan.
'Sweet Memories' carries the original look of Oriental lilies, and in our opinion is a perfect garden specimen, with strong growing stems, two-toned color and star-shaped blossoms. Though color fast in its home field (Southeast of Salem, Oregon), as with all pink flowering purebred Orientals, provide light afternoon shade for longest lasting color in hotter summer regions. Very lovely scent and with just a light smattering of deep pink spots for accent, place this beauty with more solid white or darker pink lilies, roses or other perennials for best effect. 3-4 Feet. Late June / Early July.
Johan reports there are no exact breeding records on this lily, but he has been working with genetic material from the earlier works of Leslie Woodriff, the originator of the classic lily, 'Black Beauty'. Leslie loved working with L. rubellum which would account for the early bloom time of 'Sweet Memories' as well as its pink coloration. There are a lot of 'Sweet Memories' of breeding history locked up in this lily, just waiting for the next breeder to continue on down the line.
