Tree Peony - P. Rockii

Tree Peony - P. Rockii
The rockii peony also known as “Rock’s Peony” is a woody species of peony named after Joseph Rock. Native to the mountains of mainly the Gansu District of Western China, the rockii is the unofficial national flower of China. They are best known for the obvious black to purple “spots” at the base of their petals. The large flowers range from about 14 cms (5.5 inches) to as much as 24 cms (9.5 inches)

Known for its extreme resistance to cold, drought, and disease the Rockii peony is very well suited to our northern states being hardy to zone 4a (-30F) without protection, colder with protection. In Germany the Rockii is considered the most hardy of the tree peony types. They are easy to cultivate and are quite “pest” resistant, meaning deer. In areas of high summer heat, they appreciate some light afternoon shade.

Rockii flowers are fragrant and good for cutting with single flowers described as having the fragrance of a dozen or more “regular” peonies. The plants like to be watered regularly but dislike being over watered. All rockii hybrids are very vigorous, heavy blooming, and tall growing. Most reach to about 5 feet high and 4 feet wide 5 to 7 years after planting. They are easily pruned to keep them smaller in more confined gardens. Pruning should be done after bloom is completed. Once planted they like to be left alone, and if moved when too large, will often deprive you of flowers for two or more seasons while re-establishing roots.

We recommend removing any flower buds that form in the first season and limiting bloom in the second season to insure as much energy as possible goes into establishing the plant. Doing so will reward you in future years with even more vigorous, floriferous growth.

These are all 2 year grafted plants direct from the grower with 1 to 4 stems per plant with an overall average of 2 and 3 stems.

Prices include special handling and shipping. Orders of multiple plants will be priced out at a lesser price than shown to reflect savings in shipping.

IMPORTANT: Plant with 4 to 6 inches of soil covering the graft, which means that much of your new plant will be below ground and will take at least five more years of growth for the branches to reach the average height listed. This is important to ensure you have a good network of "own roots" above the graft junction. Lack of bloom for plants that were planted too shallow (or odd leaves and blooms) generally means that the grafted top has died. About 60% of our 2-3 branch plants have a single bloom the first year of planting, but it is recommended that buds not be allowed to fully develop the first season and be removed to send energy into developing an additional root system.

(Container-growing and Spring planting) Potting your new plants in mid to late spring is recommended, especially if buds are beginning to break dormancy and your weather is unstable or if you are still renovating your garden. Use a 12 inch or deeper container and a good grade of commercial potting soil. Do not overwater, if new leaves begin to show signs of wilting, move to a shadier area, do not allow soil to stay constantly wet. Keep in light shade if weather is bright and sunny to reduce burning new foliage, then move to sunnier (not scorching hot) site after leaves have "greened" up well; transplant to permanent place in garden during fall and winter months.
